Lip and Cheek Piercings Information

Piercing has become part of our mainstream culture, so it is no surprise that many people are considering body piercings. Facial piercings specifically lip and cheek piercings are enjoying a soaring popularity surge. There are several different types of lip and cheek piercings, including the Medusa, the Monroe, the Lip Frenulum, Lip plate, and Labret. Before getting adorned in any of these locations though, it will behoove you to read on and learn more about the risks associated with each piercing.

The Medusa is still a relatively uncommon piercing, but many piercing parlors have noticed that more and more people are asking for this piercing. Located directly under the septum of the nose, in the center above the top tip, a Medusa piercing is eye catching indeed. Very similar to a labret piercing, the ball rests in the dip on the top lip. There will be swelling after the piercing, and for some people the pain is minimal, while for others the pain is intense. There are a lot of nerve endings located around the lips, and while most skilled professional piercers will not hit a nerve, there is always that slight risk that must be considered before committing to the piercing.

Gauging Ears

The Monroe also goes by two other names: The Madonna and The Crawford. Named after the three iconic women with famous moles near their mouth (Marilyn Monroe had a mole on the left side, Madonna has one of the right, and Cindy Crawford has a mole very close to the upper lip) the piercing location you choose will determine the exact name of your piercing (left cheek = Monroe; right cheek = Madonna). These piercings heal rather quickly, but for a couple days to a week after the piercing there may be significant swelling. After 8-12 weeks, you can replace the jewelry (which will be too big...the initial jewelry must accommodate swelling, so as the swelling goes down, the jewelry will be too large) with something a bit more snug. This piercing is very popular, and looks very beautiful if proper aftercare is strictly followed.

The Lip Frenulum is another rare piercing, and not everyone has the correct anatomy to have this procedure done. An upper lip frenulum piercing is often called a "smiley" because when the wearer smiles, the captive bead can be seen; a lower lip frenulum piercing is called a "frowny" for the same reason. These piercings are simple procedures for a professional piercer, but it is important to remember that teeth and gum damage can definitely happen over time with these piercings.

The Lip plate is very rare in America, but common in parts of Africa and the Amazon. This look has a devoted following in many body modification circles, and the practice is indeed very ancient - but not for everyone. Lip plates consist of piercing the lower lip and over time stretching (properly referred to as "gauging") the hole to accommodate lip plugs. Lip plugs are circular discs usually made of light wood or clay. Once you have committed to the Lip plate, your lip will be stretched to a point where only surgical operations can eliminate the gaping hole in your lip. This is not a piercing to be cavalier about - only do this if you have done all the research you possibly can, and are willing to stick with it for the long haul. While most piercings heal with no visible effects, this particular piercing will not. For all intents and purposes, this is a permanent piercing.

The labret is the most common sort of lip piercing. Many people have multiple labret piercings! It can accommodate rings or studs, and takes about 6-8 weeks to heal. Most people after the allotted healing time get a special piece of jewelry that has a labret backing, to help prevent tooth and gum aggravation. There are many types of "bites" - informal terms to describe various piercing placements (ex: Snakebites = two labret piercings on opposite sides of the lower lips); there is great potential for uniqueness and individuality. Horizontal lip piercings are extremely rare, and most piercers will not perform this type of piercing.

As with other oral piercings, infection can happen with lip and cheek piercings. There is a lot of bacteria located in and around the mouth, so careful cleaning will help prevent infection. As always, only get pierced in professional setting and with completely sterilized tools to minimize your chance of serious health consequences. Eating spicy foods, consuming alcohol, and smoking should not happen during the first 6-8 weeks of your new piercing - all of these will hinder your bodies healing efforts. Your piercer will give you a complete rundown of what to expect during healing, how to cope with problems that may arise, and the best aftercare habits. Assuming you have a decent amount of common sense, your new lip and cheek piercing will be healed in no time!

Measuring Hearing Loss

Measuring hearing loss is frequently confusing and, oftentimes, people get decibels and the concept of a percentage mixed up. Decibel is an open-ended scale of loudness that begins with zero, which is defined as the faintest sound that can be heard by a human ear. From there, regular conversation is usually around 60 decibels, most power tools fall somewhere between 100 and 120 decibels, and a gunshot might measure at 150 decibels or more. For every 10 dB (decibels) the volume increases, the perceived loudness doubles and there is a tenfold increase in sound intensity.

If someone, for example, had loss of hearing that made it impossible for him or her to hear sound fainter than 30 dB, you could say this person has a 30-decibel loss. Likewise, if they have a 50-decibel loss, they cannot hear sound that is less than 50 decibels. As you might guess, the greater the decibel loss, the less a person can hear. If someone has 40-decibel loss, this person probably will not be able to hear you whisper and may have some difficulty with even regular volume speaking.

Gauging Ears

Although 0 dB is the lowest volume a human ear can hear, it should not be confused with the lowest volume a human ear usually hears. According to most classifications, even people who cannot hear below 15 or 20 dB are considered to have "normal" hearing. In addition, since there is no highest number of decibels, you cannot simply come up with a percentage for hearing loss. The decibel scale is logarithmic, meaning that an increase of 10 dB is a 10-fold increase and not simply a set percentage. For example, 50 dB is 3000 times louder than 30 dB, not a 66 % increase as one might assume.

The implications of this in measuring sound loss are that you cannot say that someone with 20 dB of hearing loss has a 20% sound loss. On the other hand, you can use percentages to describe one's ability to discriminate between sounds. If you have had or will ever have your hearing tested, the audiologist will ask you to put on headphones. The will then play a recording of a list of words and then ask you to say them back. The audiologist then compares what you think you heard to what was actually spoken. The ratio of correct words to the number of words spoken can be seen as the percentage of your discrimination. This can be an important measurement, but it is not a way of gauging loss of hearing.

Therefore, the most accurate way of quantifying loss of hearing is to say someone has a certain decibel of loss, which can be equated to general guidelines describing the loss. For example, a 20-40 dB loss might be considered as "mild" hearing loss by an audiologist. Above this level, but below 60 or 70 decibels might be considered as "moderate" hearing loss. Levels above this can be considered "serious" or "severe" hearing loss, with 90 to 100 dB or more of hearing loss being "profound" or "extreme" hearing loss. Again, these are just guidelines, but they help in explaining the level of hearing loss in a much more helpful way than inaccurate and meaningless percentages.

Another way of putting this loss in perspective is to consider what the effects of this kind of loss are on an individual as well as what they might do to remedy the situation. Those who can hear sounds at around 20 dB or less have what could be considered "normal" hearing. Mild hearing loss usually means that, although the loss is not very extensive, one might have trouble following a conversation or distinguishing other sounds when in a loud environment. Moderate hearing loss is more severe than this, but usually less than 70 dB of hearing loss. Those with this level of loss will have trouble listening to a conversation without a hearing aid of some sort. More severe hearing loss means that an individual is very dependent on a hearing aid or implant in order to hear. Extreme hearing loss is what most would consider borderline deaf, at best. Those with this type of loss depend on sign language, written text, captioned media, and lip reading. Some may benefit from an implant.

Modern Teen Rock Star Fashions the Newest Hot Wardrobe Trends For Teenage Music Fans

Quite often, these hard-core teenage rockers also adorne themselves with multiple piercings. When it comes to peircings things are always evolving. One of the hottest piercing trends is referred to as gauging. It's a simple method of starting out with a standard piercing and then inserting ever larger sized pieces of metal into the hole. Gauges are available in a variety of sizes, including everything from plugs and tunnels to barbells and tapers.

Tongues, eyebrows, cheeks, noses, chins and lips are all popular public piercings. Some kids go all out and pierce everything twice if they can. The average teen doesn't go quite so far though and uses their piercings as small, yet distinct accessories. Of course, most places won't do a piercing for anyone under 18 unless they've got Mom or Dad's permission. That means alot of kids that want piercings have to wait until they're a little older.

Gauging Ears

For under-age kids with parents dead-set against any form of face piercing, there are easy ways to fake it. Check around at the mall at a popular teenage merchandise store. You'll find all kinds of magnetic fake piercings for your ears, lips and nose. How cool is that? They'll be totally legal with the parents and there's absolutley no risk of infection or anything else.

A lot of kids would also love to tattoo themselves. Again, this isn't a hugely popular notion among parents and other adults. But, alot like fake piercings, temporary tattoos are a great solution. There are literally thousands of inexpensive, interesting designs for kids to choose from too. It's quick, painless and best of all, temporary so there isn't any regret later on.

Jewelry like cuffs and collars are also quite popular in the teenage rock community. From glittery, girly pieces to hardcore heavy-metal spiked leather pieces, there's something for every taste. Fingerless gloves have long been accessory favorites among the most devoted rock fashion followers. Whether they're emo stripes or leather and chain, they speak rock and roll. Some teens take the jewelry idea a step further and use tooth grills with flashy rhinestones or metal finishes.

Hoodies are a new phenomena in the rock world. Nearly every rock band and fan out there wears them. Striped hoodies are super popular with emos and punk rockers. Serious rocker hoodies even come with a myriad of buckles and straps attached to them. There are even hoodies that zip up all the way to the top of the hood, forming a mask in some. Other zip all the way up hoodies even have plastic eye windows that allow you to see.

Band tee shirts are an absolute must in any rockers wardrobe. Band t's don't have to be black to be rockstar cool. The popularity of the band shirt isn't as important as the impact of the colors, graphics and words on it. Some groups of teens actually prefer to wear vintage shirts of classic rock bands while others stick with new shirts only.

Emo rockers tend to go for tight, dark wash or black jeans. Meanwhile the metal rocker can usually be found wearing baggy Tripp pants with metal chains and sippers all over them. Denim jeans with rips, tears and holes even have their place in teen rockstar fashion. Not all teenage rockers go to extreme with their pants though, some simply wear jeans and add to their look from there.

Shoes finish off every outfit! To get their specific look though, smart teens don't mix musical genres. For example, most emo lovers wouldn't wear baggy, everyday kid fashions with their emo clothes. It just wouldn't give the same impression. Chunky canvas and high-top tennis shoes usually go well with most genre styles, including emo, metal and hard-rock. Still, alot of other shoe types and styles are totally appropriate, including tall leather boots for the seriously goth all the way to spikey high heels for the glamorous rocker look.

Building the ultimate teenage rocker wardrobe is easy. Every rocker needs things like a couple of hoodies, some band tees, a couple pairs of cool jeans and some canvas tennis shoes. Add your own personality to the outfit with accessories, jewelry and top it off with an awesome hair style. Now, rock on!

Internet Audio...Radio Advertising for the 21st Century

From the time Alexander Graham Bell's little invention first allowed man to speak to others across the miles, it's been pretty much a given that nothing is as strong a tool for communication as the sound of the human voice . . . not newspapers, not magazines, not even the knowledge-stuffed texts on the Internet. Seeing may be believing, but seeing AND hearing motivates people to act!

With that in mind, I've been peddling audio on the Internet for more than 4 years. As a professional singer for most of my adult life, I've always understood the importance of sound and the effect it has on an audience. The challenge for me has been to open the eyes and ears of my own audience. It started while marketing our company's first product Rave Reviews. Rave Reviews are professionally interviewed and produced audio testimonials that can be featured on web sites for added credibility. Wouldn't every business owner want to have "real-life" testimonials on their Web sites rather than those typically boring text ones that everyone else has? One would certainly think so.

Gauging Ears

But frequently people have trouble seeing the potential for their businesses and the question in the back of everyone's mind was "do testimonials actually "sell" anything?" What proof is there? Does hearing a customer endorsement really differ that much from reading one? Can testimonials actually increase ROI? Lots of questions . . . but in this case, there's a better way to gauge the effectiveness of a new media form . . . think of yourself as the customer, and how a multi-media pitch might affect YOU.

I'm of the opinion that no matter what walk of business life you're coming from . . . the successful corporate CEO, the dedicated marketing specialist, or the struggling entrepreneur . . . we're all emotional creatures and because we're so intensely influenced by those emotions, external stimuli via our five senses play a very important role in how we perceive others and with whom we choose to do business. It seems logical that the more senses used in gauging something, the truer the evaluation. A simple inflection of the voice from an audio book can take the listener through emotional twists and turns that speak volumes over a comparative text-only version.

Obviously, reading offers one advantage over audio in that the reader can have a "pure" experience through his or her own imagination and perception, rather than listening to a voice that through its inflections and tone conjures up an image for them. But, as a business owner, marketer, or sales manager, do you really want your Internet customers to judge your product or service strictly by what they read, or think they read? Wouldn't you really like the opportunity to "talk" to them directly to personally point out the benefits of your product, and let them hear the pride of workmanship in your voice?

Through the earliest days of worldwide newspaper communications, through the era of radio that brought a faceless voice through a simple speaker, and on to the invention of television that literally changed the world . . . each medium as its turn came, gobbled up large percentages of the market. We can compare these three powerful mediums; newspaper, radio and TV, to the transitional phases of the Internet, which went quickly from obscurity to a household "must have". Now with the onslaught of audio and video to enhance it, we're well on our way to a new age of sight AND sound in our everyday online experience.

Prepare to dazzle and be dazzled as a witness and participant in the next generation of online communication and marketing: audio testimonials, audio quality assurances, audio facts and figures . . . all confidence-building messages of value from business owners directly to their target market, and all heard by potential customers. You never know if your web site visitors are actually reading all the sales text that's available on your site. But if they listen to the audio, you know they'll hear all the facts that are important to their decision-making process, and that can make the difference in helping you close the sale.

As business owners recognize the swaying power of using audio to communicate the value and quality of their products and services, online audio will come of age in a big way. Just as radio provided the sound that newspapers lacked, and wooed whole families to become an eager audience to sit and listen, audio technology for the Internet will draw in its own new generation of eager potential customers . . . it's a theory that follows history and just makes plain ol' sense . . . and good sense is something every customer appreciates!

Small Is Big In Portrait Painting

Portrait painting is a popular art. Sketching a person or an object in its complete likeness is, indeed, a skill worth having. A good portrait artist would know how small spells big in this form of art. The more you pay attention to the smallest details of your subject, the livelier your portrait becomes. By small details, we mean the tilt of the eyes, the curve of a wrinkle, the protrusion of the jaw line, the length of a dimple, etc. This little detailing makes all the difference between an ordinary portrait and that of an artists'.

The sooner you get to drawing portraits, you must decide whether you should create a live portrait or go for a photo portrait. Knowing this is important because any portrait drawing involves a lot of the light and shade factor. While creating a portrait from a photograph, make sure you have chosen a photo taken in natural light. Loud camera flashes steal the natural tone of the object and also throw flat light on it.

Gauging Ears

Now once you've started analyzing your subject, get its basic proportions correct so that your painting bears the closest resemblance to the object. The thumb-and-pencil rule often helps a great deal in gauging the face proportions. In case of photos, you may use the negative space to know the shapes of the features. But whatever you do, you must pay enough time and attention to the minutest details--the exact length and thickness of the brows, the thinness of the lips, the shape of the nose, lines of forehead (if any), the width of the forehead, the curve of the hairline, moles and marks on the face, and much more.

In any portrait drawing, the hair and eyes are the most important aspects that can add a remarkable difference to the painting. Usually the eyes are drawn first, after outlining the shape of the head. The hair is often the last thing an artist takes up to give the portrait a distinct facelift. However, always create a rough draft of shapes and positions of features with a light pencil. Then move on to darken corners or shade the required areas one by one. Even if you are sketching pet portraits, pay attention to the small to smaller details--be it the layers of fur, the curve at nose tip or the folds in its ears.

Be it dog portraits, human portrait or anything else, here's a few words of wisdom: begin with the head shape; divide the face into 6 equal squares; drop a line from mid-forehead to chin for proportioning; use light and shade efficiently on the subject's face; and, always keep analyzing your subject through the process. For, the golden rule is: little details make big differences to the art!

The History of Body Piercings - Ancient and Fascinating Around the World

Body piercings have seen a resurgence of interest in the last ten to twenty years and are becoming more and more a part of the mainstream Western culture. Take a look at any fashion or entertainment magazine and you'll see plenty of well-known celebrities with body piercings like navel rings or a labret. You might be surprised to find out that piercing is actually an ancient form of expression that most cultures have practiced at some time or other for thousands of years. Egyptian body piercings reflected status and love of beauty The earliest known mummified remains of a human that was pierced is over 5,000 years old. This worthy gentleman had his ears pierced with larger-gauge plugs in his ears, so plugs may be one of the oldest forms of body modification there is! We also know that the Egyptians loved to adorn themselves elaborately, and even restricted certain types of body piercings to the royal family. In fact, only pharaoh himself could have his navel pierced. Any one else who tried to get a belly button ring could be executed. (Tell that to Britney Spears!) Almost every well-to-do Egyptian wore earrings, though, to display their wealth and accent their beauty. Elaborate enameled and gold earrings frequently portrayed items in nature such as lotus blossoms. Body piercings are also mentioned in the Bible. In the Old Testament it's obvious that body jewelry is considered a mark of beauty and wealth, especially for Bedouin and nomadic tribes. In many cases, body jewelry was given as a bridal gift or as part of a dowry. It is clear that piercing was a sign of status and attractiveness in Biblical times. Romans were practical piercers Romans were very practical people, and for them piercing almost always served a purpose. Roman centurions pierced their nipples not because they liked the way it looked, but to signify their strength and virility. It was a badge of honor that demonstrated the centurion's dedication to the Roman Empire. As a symbol, it was important and served a specific function, unifying and bonding the army. Even Julius Caesar pierced his nipples to show his strength and his identification with his men. Genital piercing through the head of the penis was performed on gladiators, who were almost always slaves, for two reasons. A ring through the head of the penis could be used to tie the organ back to the testicles with a length of leather. In gladiatorial combat, this prevented serious injury. With a large enough ring or bar, it also prevented the slave from having sex without the owner's consent. Since the gladiator was "property," a stud fee could be charged to another slave owner for the highly prized opportunity to raise the next generation of great fighter. Making love or war, piercing makes it better Going across the ocean at around the same time, the Aztecs, Maya and some American Indians practiced tongue piercing as part of their religious rituals. It was thought to bring them closer to their gods and was a type of ritual blood-letting. The Aztec and Maya were warrior tribes, and also practiced septum piercing in order to appear fiercer to their enemies. Nothing looks quite as frightening as an opponent sporting a huge boar tusk thrust through his nose!

This practice was also common among tribes in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Some of the materials commonly used were bone, tusks and feathers. Hundreds of years later, French fur trappers in Washington State discovered American Indian tribes who wore bones through their septum and called them the Nez Perce, meaning "Pierced Noses" in French. It's interesting that civilizations separated by thousands of miles and even centuries often developed a love for the same kind of body piercings to enhance certain features, isn't it?

Gauging Ears

In Central and South America, lip labrets were popular for purely aesthetic reasons - women with pierced lips were considered more attractive. In fact, the holes were often stretched to incredible size as progressively larger wooden plates were inserted to emphasize the lips as much as possible. (Kind of like collagen today). The Aztecs and Maya also sported lip labrets of gold and jade, many of them elaborately carved into mythical or religious figures or sporting gemstones. These were seen as highly attractive and to enhance sexuality. As the world moved into the dark ages, interest in piercing died down somewhat and the medieval church began to condemn it as sinful. For a few hundred years, Western civilization abandoned the practice. As the Renaissance went into full swing, however, interest in piercing began to pick up again. A new era and a new interest in body piercings Sailors became convinced that piercing one ear would improve their long-distance site, and so the site of a sailor with a gold or brass ring became common. Word also spread that should a sailor be washed ashore after a shipwreck, the finder should keep the gold ring in exchange for providing a proper Christian burial. Sailors were both religious and superstitious, so they generally spent a lot for a large gold earring to hedge their bets. Men became much more fashion-conscious during the Renaissance and Elizabethan eras, and almost any male member of the nobility would have at least one earring, if not more. Large pearl drops and enormous diamond studs were a great way to advertise your wealth and standing in the community. It could also designate royal favor if your earring was a gift from a member of the royal family. Women, not wanting to be outshone by the men in all their finery, began to wear plunging necklines, with the Queen of Bavaria introducing the most outrageous, which consisted of not much at all above the waist. In order to adorn themselves, women began piercing their nipples to show off their jewelry. Soon they began wearing chains and even strands of pearls draped between the two.

Men and women both discovered that these nipple piercings were also delightful playthings in bed, adding sensitivity to the breasts and giving the men both visual and tactile stimulation. Men began getting pierced purely for pleasure as well. While not entirely mainstream, piercing of the nipples and, occasionally, the genitals, continued to hold interest for members of the upper crust of society in Europe on and off for the next few hundred years. The next resurgence of interest was, surprisingly, during the Victorian age, which is usually seen as very repressed. Prince Albert, future husband of Queen Victoria, is said to have gotten the penis piercing that is named after him in order wear the tight-fitting trousers so popular at the time. The ring could then be attached to a hook on the inside of one pant leg, tucked safely away between the legs for a neat, trim look. Although we have no record of Victoria's response to the piercing itself, there is ample evidence she was wildly in love with her husband and almost never left his side after their marriage! Soon, Victorian men were getting Prince Albert's, frenums and a variety of other piercings purely for the pleasurable sexual effects, and women were doing the same. By the 1890's, it was almost expected that a woman would have her nipples pierced. In fact, some doctors at the time suggested it improved conditions for breastfeeding, although not all agreed. It was an interesting double standard -- plenty of people were doing it, but no one was talking about it. Modern-day body piercings In the last hundred years or so, body piercings in the Western world have mostly been limited to the ears, a standard hold-over from the fact that both men and women wore earrings during Elizabethan times. The Puritan movement did away with men wearing earrings, however, and it didn't really regain popularity until recently. Nose rings found new interest when young people (they were called hippies then) from the U.S. began traveling in India extensively looking for enlightenment in the 1960's. They noticed the nostril rings that most women had been wearing there since the sixteenth century. In India, this was a form of traditional, accepted adornment and was often linked to an earring by a chain. For rebellious teens from America, it was a great form of rebellion. After bringing nose piercings back to the U.S., the interest in body piercings of all kinds quickly caught on during the 1980's and 1990's. Celebrities, sports stars and singers all began sporting a variety of piercings. Soon, high school students and even stay-at-home moms were flashing new body piercings. And the rest, as they say, is history! This article on the "History of Body Piercings" reprinted with permission.

How Can You Wear 10 Gauge Earrings?

Ear gauging has been an old tradition in many rural parts of the world but it has recently traveled to urban societies and has especially become very popular among the young people all over the world. Ear gauging means the process by which your ear piercing is increased by stretching your skin so that you can wear larger gauges. 10 gauge earrings is the trendiest size and it looks perfect with most of the people. In this article, I will give you some guidelines and tips about how can you gauge your ears to size 10, so that you are able to wear stylish gauge earrings of size 10!

You can have your ears gauged from professional beauty salons. The size depends on your choice and style, while the time it will take to have your ears gauged, depends on your skin type. The gauge size names are in even numbers with the size increasing as the number goes down. For instance, size 10 gauge is smaller than size 2 gauge. For sizes longer than this, they are presented in fractions.

Gauging Ears

Most common question people have in their mind at the time of ear gauging is that if it will stretch back to its normal size or not. The simple answer is NO. Therefore, when you are selecting your size, be sure that you can live with that size for the rest of your life. However, it is not completely impossible to have your skin stretch back to the normal size but there are certain variables that it depends on. These variables include:

How it was stretched? If it was stretched by removing a piece of your skin then there is hardly a chance it will come back to its normal size.

Duration - It also depends on the time duration; when did you pierce your ear? If it has been a few years, then the piercing is all set and would not stretch back. In case of few weeks and months, chances are it will get back to its normal size after a couple of months.

It depends even on the size of stretch. If it is small then it has chances to revert back.
